![]() ![]() What explains such divisiveness? Why does outrage seem so common? Are conditions in the world getting worse despite obvious progress? What role is technology playing? I had to look elsewhere to rewire my meaning-making machinery. My news-intensive diet did not re-establish a connection with how the world worked. But I found very little explanation of why such disfunction. I saw more of the things that reinforced my feeling of disconnection: angry voters, polarized politicians, outraged commentators, culture wars, divided countries. The talking heads of the news gave off plenty of heat but not much light. This was insightful but in an unexpected way. My instinct was to dive deeper into the daily news. ![]() So began my journey to find new ways to make meaning in the world. I lost the feeling I could understand and explain changes in the world. That felt uncomfortable. Events happened for certain kinds of reasons. These changes might be surprising or sometimes unwelcome, yet I always took a kind of comfort in that they seemed to me at least explainable. My journey from pessimism through optimism to possibilismīig events happen in the world – governments falter, nations quarrel, social causes erupt, trends take off. ![]()
